The other day, some mommy blogger friends of mine and I got to get our craft on at the Lake Forest location of Board & Brush. To say I was excited is a huge understatement. I have been wanting to do this forever! And let me tell ya…the experience did not disappoint!
As soon as we arrived, our table was setup with all of the wood for our projects, the stencils for the designs, and lots of crafty tools. Just looking around the room at all the projects that had been done and all the options was so inspiring. I couldn’t wait to get started!
But first…wine. They have a great menu of drinks, both alcoholic and non. I started with a lovely glass of rose and then had a moscato later in the project. Both were delicious and the perfect pairing to our activity.
I gotta admit that it is a little intimidating when you first get started – stains and washes and power tools, oh my – but the staff is so incredible the entire step of the way. They will patiently and carefully walk you through each step from sanding and distressing to staining and washing to peeling and setting the stencils to painting and finishing your piece. And if it’s not exactly how you like it, they will stand beside you and help guide you towards whatever it is you want it to be. They were so sweet and so hands on and made the process seem so easy – and I am not a crafty type at all, yet I was dabbing and sanding like a pro by the end of the night!
The hardest part of the whole experience is choosing which project to do. They have such an enormous catalog of beautiful signs and decor. They have something for every season, for every occasion, for every everything! And a large number of the pieces are customizable with names and dates. Mom blogger Tiff went all out making a sign of all 4 of her boys’ names and birthdates. And it looks amazing!
I love that you can make every design completely your own. There’s an endless list of combinations of stains and washes and paint colors to truly make your project completely unique and all yours. If they don’t have the exact color you’re looking for, they’ll help you mix colors to create it. If it doesn’t turn out how you hoped, they have tips and tricks to fix it. The staff is right beside you the entire time and their knowledge and skill is invaluable!
I am so proud of the table trivet that I created and I absolutely love it. It’s exactly what I envisioned for our dining table and a perfect match for our decor. It makes it extra special that I made it myself. Yes, there are imperfections, but that adds to its charm and character and I could not be happier with it.
But don’t worry…if you aren’t the crafty type or are just short on time (the session is 3+ hours long), the studio can make your project for you. Just choose your designs, any customizations applicable, your stain/wash and the colors and Board & Brush Lake Forest will do the rest. I personally love the handmade aspect of it, but I know it’s not for everyone so I love that you can still take home a beautiful and custom creation any way you choose to. Like this coat rack the staff helped us make for our friend, Jen, who couldn’t make it. She loves it even more than if she’d made it because her friends helped make it for her with lots of love.
My friends and I had so much fun at Board & Brush in Lake Forest! The time just flew by as we completed our projects and it was so cool to watch everyone’s develop alongside my own. I highly recommend the workshop to anyone and everyone! It’s the perfect place for a girls night (or morning) out. We are already planning our next projects!
Thank you so much Board & Brush Lake Forest for having us! We are all so thrilled with our creations and truly loved the experience. Major kudos to the staff for all their help and encouragement!
